- 1929: Italy and Vatican City sign the Lateran Treaty, recognizing Vatican City as an independent state under the sovereignty of the Holy See.
- 1938: BBC Television produces the world’s first science fiction television program, an adaptation of a section of the Karel Čapek play “R.U.R.”, that coined the term “robot”.
- 1979: The Iranian Revolution establishes an Islamic theocracy under the leadership of Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini.
- 1990: Nelson Mandela is released from Victor Verster Prison outside Cape Town, South Africa, after 27 years as a political prisoner.
- 2006: Vice President Dick Cheney accidentally shoots Harry Whittington in the face, neck, and chest during a hunting trip in Texas.
- 2011: The Arab Spring begins with a series of protests across the Middle East and North Africa.
- 2012: Whitney Houston, American singer, and actress, dies at the age of 48.
