Quote of the Day: Change

“One cannot step twice in the same river”

Heraclitus

I came across this quote for the first time 10 years ago and it has stayed with me ever since. Heraclitus proposes that in life nothing stays the same. If we put our foot in a river, then take it out before returning it again, the original water has moved on downstream, so it is a new river into which we place our foot. He even surmises that in that short space of time our foot is not the same as it has grown marginally older! I love this quote as it encourages us to embrace change because change is inevitable anyway.

  1. This is a great quote, Andrew. I read your explanation twice – it made so much sense. It’s an excellent way of thinking about change, which isn’t something I usually deal with very well. I knew the bit about the river but never considered the foot aspect of this before. Everything living particle on the Earth changes from one millisecond to the next now I come to think about it. Thanks for sharing your quote and wisdom. 🌞

    1. Ellie, in my life I meet so many people that are a victim of change, but I choose to own change. You cannot combat inevitability. Even growing older and increasing levels of infirmity are just a preparation for the time I am not here! If I didn’t get old or degenerate I could not be prepared for accepting my eventual exit. Thank you for your comment, it made me reassess to!
